Often we forget how important it is to reflect upon books we read…I mean REALLY think deeply, not simply answering ‘what happened in the beginning, middle and end?’. The following reading comprehension/thinking strategies (outlined at the bottom of each worksheet) are so important to develop and I believe, make better readers! If implemented in the right way, this can INSPIRE kids to read and not by you, but by other students!
I wanted to create an Australian resource that could be easily implemented, using any type of narrative (although some can be used for other written texts). With my own class, I allow the students to select their own books to read. If they enjoyed reading their book, they fill out a ‘Reading Reflections’ sheet. I take a picture of them holding their book, print it to size, ready for them to cut and stick onto their sheet. Once complete, it then goes on display for other students to read and hopefully inspired to read the book themselves.
