Reading Comprehension: Spring Short Stories & Activities:
Practice comprehension skills with this set of three spring short stories and activities!
These simple short stories are intended to be basic so that struggling readers or ELS/ELL readers can concentrate on the order of events and comprehend what is happening in each story. The related comprehension activities are designed to reinforce summarizing and sequencing skills --excellent formats for both individual work, or a literacy center/station.
Targeted for grade 1 reading and comprehension, but may be appropriate for advanced kindergartners, and second graders needing extra support.
Use for your literacy station!
The story passages (colored papers) are best if laminated so that students can read from them over and over. Let's face it...kids love to read from colored pages with cute graphics! But print what you need for the literacy center, and just print the black and white recording sheet for them to write their responses. Otherwise, students could write answers with a dry erase marker.
Print-Friendly Mini Booklet
For the mini booklet, you just copy and print in gray scale as they are mostly black and white. The booklet pages are easy to print and staple together for kids to read in and complete on their own.
These pages are black and white:
-tracing sentences to number in order
-response sheet for the cloze activities
-three mini books
You'll find these activities in multiple formats for your multi-level learners--designed to focus on comprehension and event sequencing skills. This resource facilitates true differentiation in a classroom.
In addition to teacher notes and directions, you will find:
*Three short story passages
*Three comprehension pages, or cloze writing templates (missing content words) correspond to the story passages (a comprehension practice skill)
*Three answer keys – one for each cloze template
*Three sets of story cards or pages to sequence in order, and turn into three 6-page mini-books
*Three sequence/order of events pages (can use as an answer sheet for ordering story cards, and also for summarizing or retelling each story). Some pages do not have pictures leaving room for kids to illustrate the sentences.
*How to Make a Folded Book or Concertina (Directions and photos )
