Understanding how to read strategically is important at any grade level. This handout is designed to help students easily remember the steps to reading with critical awareness. The BRAT method is not only a humorous strategy to recall, but the steps are simple, and with repetition, students will master reading. This handout is intended for texts that have supplemental questions, whether multiple choice or short answer. The BRAT strategy is not too complicated for middle school learners and not too childish for high schoolers. It can also be especially helpful in preparation for standardized exams that include reading passages, as well as for struggling or reluctant readers who may skim texts.
