More Info:
This resource comes in 2 versions. One is a printable version with handouts that can be photocopied and distributed to students. The other is a digital version with Google Slides™ for students to use.
In both the printable and digital versions, there are 2 graphic organizers for students to use, each listing the same 10 reading strategies but used in different ways. One organizer is best used when reading 1 section of a text, for example when reading a novel chapter. The other organizer is more suited for when students are reading 2 sections in a text, for example when reading subsections in a social studies or science textbook. Reading strategies such as using context clues, using text features, creating mental images, and self-questioning are included, plus additional strategies.
You can use these graphic organizers:
* For jigsaw reading of social studies or science books,
* When your whole class or small groups are reading a story,
* In literature circles, and
* When students are reading any text independently.
A list of all 10 reading comprehension strategies in this resource is provided. You can use it to review how to use the strategies before your students read a text. You may also want to share it with your students after they have created their own personal picture dictionaries.
You can have students focus on practicing a couple strategies or tell them to use any and all reading strategies when they read a text. Then, when students are finished reading, have a class discussion about they used the strategies and let your students learn from each other.
This resource also contains 3 pages/slides that your students can use to create their own digital or printable picture dictionary of reading comprehension strategies. There is a cover page/slide for students to write or type their name and another page/slide for describing a reading strategy. That is duplicated in the resource so students can copy it for every reading strategy they use; that is, they will create a new page or slide for each new reading strategy used.
In addition, recording pages and slides are provided for your convenience; they are also in both printable and digital versions. Any time you ask students to practice a reading comprehension strategy when reading a novel, textbook, or other nonfiction text, you can record the reading strategies used on these tracking pages/slides. Writing them in list form like this makes it easy to see which reading strategies you have already used and then you can easily plan which reading comprehension strategies you want your students to practice in the future. You can also use these recording forms to keep track of which reading strategies each individual student is using and then have them focus on the strategies they don’t use as often, so they get practice using those reading strategies, too.
A list of the ELA Common Core standards this resource helps address is included if you work in a Common Core state.
The printable graphic organizers were originally created for English Language Learners in Grades 5 - 8 but all students can benefit from using these reading comprehension strategies. Use these reading strategies practice materials to help your students read across the curriculum!
