I use these 13 different reading response bookmarks to quickly assess students’ understanding and application of each reading comprehension strategies in their independent reading. They are great for using with individual student conferences or as a quick assessment for mini lessons.
How I use them in my classroom:
After trying multiple ways to check that my kiddos were using their comprehension strategies during Read to Self, I knew that I had to come up with a consistent method of holding them accountable. I am not able to conference on a daily basis with all of my students, so I use these Strategy Response bookmarks as a way for students to show evidence of their use of a particular strategy. When I conference with students, we initially come up with a comprehension strategy to work on based on their individual needs. I give them a response sheet (or multiple) to stick inside books of my choosing in their book box. Whenever I conference with them again (within the next week), we go over their strategy responses together. Not only do these provide me with valuable information, but they bring a tangible piece to student conferences. Students have to show and tell me that they have an understanding of each comprehension strategy and can use it in their independent reading.
