The rain was pouring outside as we drove home. The wind seemed to be tossing the car all over the road. I have never been so happy to pull into the driveway and make a run for the door. Even my mother, who could drive in any weather, seemed to be relieved to be off the roadway. Mum fixed a quick dinner of hot dogs and macaroni and cheese before she settled in so we could watch a movie together. Just as the movie started the dryer buzzed reminding my mother that the clothes needed taken out. She waited until the first commercial to run down and grab the clothing. We folded the laundry while watching the movie. The storm outside was raging, but we were safe indoors and dry. During the next commercial we each took our laundry into the bedrooms to be put away. Suddenly the cat started squalling and the dog whined at my feet. A framed photo fell off the wall just as the power went out. It was not unusual for the power to go out during a storm, but the whole house seemed electrified. Mum told me to grab a blanket and go to the basement. I grabbed a blanket, called the animals and headed downstairs.
