It takes a village, right? Well if you have a struggling reader in your 3-5 classroom then you know it is going to take the help of parents for students to become successful. This is a reading comprehension manual for Parents - grades 3-5. It's called "Raising a Reader", and it can help parents build comprehension skills.
Sometimes parents don't know how to help their child. Sometimes parents want an easy way out and put the pressure on the teacher and school to work the miracles in order to help their child learn to read. The reality of it is, the parents play a huge role and should take responsibility. This manual is a great resource for both of those situations.
I decided to write this little manual after a parent conference. I knew the parents were working with their child, but I wasn't sure they really knew the right approach to take when it came to the nightly reading time. I really just need a packet to hand them to help them see what they can do at home to make reading time a productive time. I also felt like they were looking for this help.
This packet is also very suitable for a homeschooling parent who doesn't have an education background. It will provide in a nutshell some of the skills to focus on when working with your child.
This packet focuses on the 3-5 reader. It gives suggestions on 'reading to learn', with a focus on comprehension skills.
The packet has a cute cover as pictured in the preview above. It starts with a parent letter from me (the author). It then answers the questions of: What do good readers go? What should my child's reading routine consist of? What kinds of skills should I focus on when working with my child?
The manual also has a set of cards that parents can use when talking about books with their child.
There are 2 sheets of basic reminders of things to think about when it comes to reading with your child.
This packet can be sent home with your struggling readers, it can be passed out at conferences to a select few, or it can be copied and given to each parent in your class.
For parents who really don't know how to help their child build comprehension, they will appreciate this product.
NOTE: This packet is not intended for school wide use. When purchased, it can be used by one teacher for her own students. If you are a reading specialist or an administrator and would like to use this school wide for struggling readers, please purchase additional licenses.
