This is a 5-page short story, fiction genre, which is designed to help students develop reading comprehension skills. The story is original (my writing but using a pen name), and contemporary taking place in today's setting. I have tried this story with my students and had very good response. The title is "The Assignment", which refers to the narrator first telling the reader she felt she must (as in giving herself an "assignment") write her dream, since it has such a good meaning. The plot involves a couple meeting and getting ready for their wedding day. She is far less wealthy than he, and on their wedding day her doubts about her plainness and simple wedding dress turn into an obsession at the last minute to alter her dress into something unique. She is two hours late for the wedding, and misses the entire ceremony. The groom is gone and she rushes to find him as she realizes "she" became more important than "we". There are 25 multiple choice questions including genre, setting, etc. (so students need to know some literature terms, or teach them as you go). Answers with brief explanations are also included. There are 11 pages total. This is story #1 of a series of 5 intended for reading comprehension.
