This is an 8-page short story, fiction based on fact genre, which is designed to help students develop reading comprehension skills. The story is original (my writing but using a pen name), and contemporary taking place in today's setting. I have tried this story with my students and had very good response. The title is "Kansas Sunset", which refers to the narrator telling the reader of her travels in the state of Kansas (U.S.), which starts during day one's sunset. The plot involves a young adult girl who used to visit family frequently in Kansas and who still has a remaining, yet elderly aunt she wishes to visit by traveling alone. She is told not to rent a car and travel out in farming areas alone, but she is determined to prove that she has the ability to adventure on her own. An approaching storm suddenly captures her attention while driving and she crashes into a large bull in a free-range area. While in the hospital, she meets the surgeon who reset her leg, falls in love with him, and eventually marries. He is an intern about to move out of Kansas and into a large practice, but they decide to stay living in the small town where her aunt (who actually was no longer living) resided, and enjoy the Kansas sunsets. There are 21 multiple choice questions including genre, setting, etc. (so students need to know some literature terms, or teach them as you go). Answers with brief explanations are also included. This is story #3 of a series of 5 pieces intended for reading comprehension.
