Description

Are you looking for a way to grow students' leadership abilities and their reading comprehension at the same time? This resource uses biographies of diverse leaders to teach students about the attributes of a leader and then guides them through growing this leadership skills with a project. Now updated and ready to go in EASEL! You choose the format that works best for you!

This unit teaches students leadership skills (using the Habits of Mind) while also meeting Common Core Standards in reading and writing. Students will collaborate and learn essential 21st Century skills by reading biographies, watching videos, creating word clouds, and studying a current problem. The unit has rich writing experiences and includes original leveled texts about four historical people: Frida Kahlo, Thomas Edison, Louis Braille and Jane Goodall. It makes a great way to start the year!

The download contains everything you need to teach the unit - a pre-assessment, formative assessment, student handouts, rubrics for all the writing, and task cards to keep early finishers authentically engaged and extend the learning. Each lesson plan helps students develop Habits of Mind and works well with Gifted students.

The lesson plans are clearly laid out, and often include a photograph of the chart you will create. The final class project is to identify a local problem and then become part of the solution. You will love watching your students take initiative and work to make the world a little better.

This unit was written to meet 4th and 5th grade standards, and the leveled texts are in that band.
