The development of good comprehension skills are essential not only for success in school but also for success in life. The activities and exercises in this workbook will expose students to advanced level vocabulary words. In addition, students will practice spelling and writing common sight words while having fun. The poems in this book are funny and easily relatable by children.
The Reading Comprehension With an Introduction to Poetic Verse lessons are integrated with vocabulary development, reading comprehension, sight word recognition, spelling, handwriting, and drawing exercises. Each lesson contains four sections.
1. A classic poem that students will read and make reference to.
2. Two pages of reading comprehension questions.
3. A following directions exercise that incorporates drawing and coloring.
4. A fill-in-the-blanks activity for the development of vocabulary, spelling, and handwriting.
Each poem inside was selected to engage readers and draw them into what each character was experiencing. The comprehension exercises allow each student to practice learning how to read for information and become proficient at conveying that information in print.
Fill-in-the-blank exercises help students get a feel for writing new and advanced words while also writing commonly used sight words.
Each poem introduces the student to new words, words that they are likely to encounter when reading more complex literary pieces. If complex words are in the poem, those words will be defined at the beginning of each section. Parents/teachers will need to discuss these definitions with the child before reading each poem in order for the child to develop a familiarity with the meaning and pronunciation of the new words.
Each poetry section has a ‘Following Directions’ exercise for students to complete. Each exercise pulls details from the poem and allows the student to artistically recreate the characters and settings in the way they imagine them to look.
Each exercise requires students to recall details that they’ve read. These exercises introduce students to the importance of reading to understand facts and details.
