I found that using visuals to represent a concept made it much easier for my students, especially my ESL students. For example, I taught students to act as a detective when reading and look for text evidence and context clues. My visual for "inference" is a detective. When teaching main idea and supporting details, I used a desk as a visual. The top of the desk is the most important part, the main idea. It would not be a desk if it did not have the four supporting legs, or supporting details.
