Talking with students about the books they are reading is a great way to connect, assess, and build rapport. Using a conference assessment tool keeps those conversations targeted and aligned with standards, yet still allow for organic discussion.This is a rubric to be used early in your conferencing, as its focus is book selection, genre identification, identifying plot events and explaining how they influence future action.

Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
