• Why?.... Welcome to an EASY way to expand your children’s vocabulary AND fluency in their independent reading times with their very own good fit books! This is an authentic, student lead, way to expand vocabulary where each student needs it. THEY locate words new to THEM and they investigate, or research, their meanings. It correlates with CAFE strategy, "tune into interesting words" and "look carefully at letters and words."
• This resource is designed to be used to supplement students’ daily independent, partner, and small group reading. I use it as a supplementary tool in my daily five routines. With a focus on phonics and vocabulary, students jot down words they encounter that they either are not able to sound out or had difficulty sounding out on the ‘decode it mystery’ column and words they feel unfamiliar with on the ‘word investigations.’
• This list they have compiled can be used as their very own, differentiated, word-work center content or can be explored during another designated block in the day. Dictionaries and access to child-friendly search engines are recommended for the investigation portion. For fluency, I use our SRA Imagin It! curriculum sound cards as fluency clues to help students decode words (any phonetical support can be used with this resource). They can create Frayer’s model, pictures, sentences, respond to task cards, etc. to demonstrate the meanings of their new found words in the notes portion!
• Options: You can use their lists and notes to conference from. You could require that they locate a certain number of words per week for them to locate in their readings and to study throughout the week.
