Reading Fluency BOOT CAMP stations are just what every elementary school and classroom needs! This program is designed to be a short, intensive, creative and ENGAGING way to practice reading skills needed to improve fluency.
Stations are set up to be ready for anyone who walks up to it, they will know what to do. Time is not wasted teaching volunteers how to run the centers. Directions and supplies are all located on the bulletin board ready for all volunteers helping students with their fluency.
My biggest concern about practicing fluency for students was that students never seemed really excited that they were being pulled aside to practice these strategies. It didn’t matter if they were with a teacher, parent, peer, etc. The kids didn’t really “buy into” the practice time. With the Reading Fluency Boot Camp Stations, they couldn’t wait for their name to be called to go out in the hall and participate in the “interactive” centers. When I saw this, I knew that our program was working!
Active Stations Include:
Station 1 – Sight Words
Station 2 – Phrases
Station 3 – Poetry and Expression
Station 4 – Non-Fiction
Station 5 – IPAD Recording/Fluency Task Cards
Station 6 – Passages and Stories
Station 7 – Race Track Reading
Station 8 – Roll and Read Recruit!
Overall, this program was embraced by our administration, teachers, parents, volunteers and most of all, the STUDENTS! I encourage you to use this program each year to provide more movement and a novel way to do things we have already done for years and years. It is a fresh approach and it is exciting to see kids WANT to practice. Practice is KEY to success and finally we have found a way to make practice meaningful, fun and it actually works to improve fluency!
