Help students apply their phonics skills using engaging fluency activities! Your students will love reading these fun facts about animals.
Sometimes repeated reading isn't enough to build your students' fluency. These activities help directly teach the 5 components of fluency: accuracy, rate, phrasing, expression, and punctuation. In addition each lesson focuses on a different phonics skill to help students practice and apply their knowledge of digraphs, vowel teams, and r-controlled vowels.
The lessons build from the word level to the passage level. Students will complete speed drills with words, learn to read sentences with phrases, and use expression and punctuation in passages.
These activities are perfect for RTI groups. While they were designed for reading intervention work in small groups, teachers have also had success using them at a teacher station in a general ed classroom. The expression and punctuation activities can also be used as mini-lessons for the whole class.
The passages in these lessons are at the following levels:
Digraphs and Blends passages - late 1st to mid 2nd
Vowel Teams passages- mid 2nd to mid 3rd
R-controlled Vowels passages - early 3rd to mid 4th
Each file includes:
clear visual of fluency elements
practice phonics skill with sorting
word lists with single syllable words and nonsense words
1 page of 3-4 word phrases
Pyramid phrase sentences:
sentences that expand one phrase at a time.
sentences designed for easy scooping of phrases.
practice putting stress on different words in a sentence and reading with different emotions.
practice pausing, stopping, and using voice inflection for different punctuation marks.
5 passages that can be used for repeated readings.
