Created to encourage my students to read from a variety of genres, this Reading Tic Tac Toe can be adapted to fit a variety of instructional purposes! I've used it with 3rd-6th grades and my students loved it!
The basic concept is simple - read a book that fits the genre in the box and record the title. Give it a time limit (I gave them seven weeks to complete it) and read, read, read!
Play three in row, four corners, intersecting lines (an "X" or a "T"), or blackout!
Change it up for fun! I've included many different genres and categories in the past, based on the lessons I presented. When learning about the John Newbery award or the Caldecott, for instance, I changed the squares to include those.
Some fun ideas to try:
Grand Canyon Young Reader Award
Don't forget specific subjects you might be learning about, ie: Westward Movement, Civil War, Japan, Insects, etc.
Have fun with it!
