The use of reading groups to foster and improve reading skills is a well recognised as a highly effective language teaching tool
One problem with the conducting of reading groups is the need to have a sufficient number of multiple copies of suitable books for the class. This can be very costly.
We believe that the development of sets of books to be available through teacherspayteachers is one way to overcome this cost problem. To this purpose we present the first of our reading sets. Each of these sets will contain five books. All the books in one set will be of the same level of reading skills. With five books and multiples copies of each book it will be possible to supply all the books necessary for the whole class for the cost of the download ($6) and the printing costs.
This single book is at Level One in the series. Level One, although containing a large number of sight words, consolidates many of the words by repeating the vocabulary throughout the story.
Following each story are two pages of easy exercises using the vocabulary from the story. The first page contains a Crossword and a Find a Word puzzle. An answer sheet for these is also included. The second page contains a cloze activity.
Following these is a Word Bank Poster containing all the vocabulary from the story.
We recognize that as the teaching progresses different levels of ability also will emerge. These can be catered for by other sets in progressingly more advanced stories in level two, three and four.
Our most successful products so far have been the sets of Sequence Story Cards. Those teachers who have these cards will recognize many of the animal characters that appear in the books but with vocabulary added and more extended story lines.
