Every American should read the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, the formality of its language intimidates students, who often find it difficult to understand or lose key parts of its meaning. This reading guide is intended to rectify that problem.
This reading guide provides thirteen questions that guide students through the most important parts of the Declaration of Independence. Students are asked to interpret some key phrases, find important ideas, and ruminate on certain choices Jefferson made.
When I have used this guide, I have found that students, including struggling students, can access the Declaration of Independence for the first time.
