This format is used for students to document their interactions with a novel as they read it. It requires students to summarize what they have read, identify questions about what they have read and make connectios to the text. These are excellent homework assignments when tied to a reading assignment (e.g. read Chapters 1-4 and complete a Reading Interaction Log) as they help students process what they read and can be an excellent launching point for class discussions the next class (e.g. using your RIL's, someone summarize what happened, what questions did you write down? what connections did you make?) This is also a great way to hold students accountable for completing their reading assignments for a novel on time, as they can't be copied from other students. When used consistently over time, they also help to develop students' writing fluency and act as a writing-to-learn stratgey.
