Product Description
Start off the year on the right foot by making a connection to your new kids with a reading interest inventory!

Kids come to us with varying experiences and attitudes towards reading and it is our job to get them to become life-long readers and learners! We cannot assume that all kids LOVE reading. Most of the questions on my inventory for grades 2-5 are open-ended, not yes and no answers. When you give the survey, you want to remind kids to be as honest as possible as there is a tendency to tell you what you want to hear. Let the kids know that this is how you will be able to give them the best year of their life! By allowing them to complete this inventory, you will gain valuable information about your kids! There is also a second inventory for grades 2-5 that asks kids to rate different text types and whether they would try it in the upcoming year. This is also available in Spanish.

During the first weeks of school, I like to conduct reading conferences where the student and I just have a conversation about reading. With my Reading Interest Inventory for grades 2-5, you can use these questions as you interview your students OR have them fill it out at school or for homework. This inventory is also available Spanish as so many of us have Spanish-speaking kids. If you do use the Spanish version, be sure you have someone who can translate their responses! By providing a Spanish version, you are making those students feel accepted right away!

My K-1 Reading Interest Inventory uses pictures. I would do this either in whole group or small group. There are 8 questions that you would read to the students and they would circle the feeling that they most identify with at the time of the survey. The remaining two questions can be read to them and you can encourage them to do their best writing in order to respond. This will give you immediate insight into their writing ability. You can also use the last two short answer questions as interview questions that you could do one on one during the first week of school. **This is also available in Spanish and would be great to send home so that parents could do it with their child.

I would administer the inventory at the beginning of the year, mid-point and then the end of the year to see if there are changes. If you teach first grade by January, you could use the grade 2-5 survey with your kids to gain more information about them.

Here's to a GREAT year!
