Reading Intervention Small Group Instruction Lesson Plan
For English Learners or Children Who Are Stagnating
This is an intervention plan for students such as English Learners and struggling readers who have difficulty understanding literal text, as they are still acquiring language, phonics, or writing skills. The plan includes many elements of the text and the premise for this lesson structure is that, if a child is exposed to all these elements every time a teacher works with a text with the students, they will acquire the muscle memory they need to work with texts independently.
Since the text is so highly supported using a close reading format, and the students are reading below grade level, it is recommended that the texts used be 1-2 levels higher than students’ typical instructional level, thus creating more opportunities for the students to see higher level texts with higher level vocabulary and higher level thematic elements.
