This product provides six weeks of reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension activities for struggling readers in the middle grades. It can be used with my Reading Intervention Organizers and Rubrics for Supporting Fluency, Accuracy and Comprehension materials in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Carla-Jennetti, or it can stand alone as an add-on to your existing reading instruction program. The Teacher Copies of the student readings can be used as Running Record forms as well as for fluency & accuracy checks in a repeated reading intervention. Each of the six nonfiction texts is provided at the following reading levels: J – K, L – M, N, O – P and one is available in P – Q. They are created specifically for students at the middle school level (5th – 8th grades). With that in mind, each one may not look the same as a text leveled for an elementary student because a struggling reader in the middle grades is approaching a text with more experience and background knowledge than an early elementary student will. Middle schoolers also need to be offered texts that are motivating. Most struggling readers at this level are also reluctant readers. Handing them another text about puppies, or the life and times of George Washington isn’t going to cut it. Therefore, while the texts in this product are written below the expected reading level for a middle school student, the topics chosen and the overall structure of the texts are appropriate for older students who are struggling readers. The text levels take into account, word frequency, sentence length, number and frequency of dependent and independent clauses, number of high frequency words, and overall word count, and age-appropriate, motivating content.
