This journal covers literary elements such as character development, significance of setting, literary devices, and vocabulary. I wanted my students to be able to read, analyze, and critically think to form their own text supported opinions. Early on, I discovered that just assigning a work to read and asking students to write a report on what they read did not foster the critical analysis that I desired. I found that students did not know how to support their thoughts about the various elements of the literary work. The journals I found on the Web seemed to lack the things for which I was looking, so I created my own.
I sincerely hope you find it as effective as I did. Several of my students came back to tell me that their college literature classes were easy and that other students asked them how they were able to analyze literature the way they did. Their response was “you should have had my eleventh grade English teacher.”
Thank you for viewing my work.
