Many teachers have students fill out a reading log every night. The log tells you how much time the students read, but not much else. I wanted to know about the books they
were reading, and how they were understanding what they were reading.
I developed this packet so that I could get a quick look into their books. I can use their
responses to start conversations about their readings and students get to interact more
meaningfully with their books.
Students like this packet because the questions are quick. You will find this packet is versatile.
It can be used with any chapter book. Students can use this for independent reading, or
it can help spark discussions in reading groups.
Packet is 10 pages that include four journal pages of “Quick Questions”. I felt that some
skills were important enough to repeat on each sheet and some skills only show up one time.
This packet also includes book marks that remind students to do their “Quick Questions”.
The frog theme is cute for younger grades, but might not work for older students. I did not
put the frog on any of the actual journal pages.
