Are you tired of dragging your students' Reading Journals (composition books) home to check and grade their responses? I have found a way to make the grading process much easier and beneficial for your student’s learning! Weekly, my students write me a letter about what they are reading in class. This has students work on the writing process and their writing and reading skills, which gives you a grade for both.
This download is the letter I give each student. It explains to students the purpose behind writing weekly reading letters. They glue this sheet in their Reading Journal (RJ). If you like this idea, please check out the format they refer to, the checklist they use, and the rubric I use. Please note that we use the Daily Five and the IPICK model in my room from Gail Boushey & Joan Moser (The Sisters); therefore, it is referenced in this letter to my students.
