Want a more structured way to assess your students reading response journal writings? This rubric will help to hold your students accountable and give them specific criteria to know your expectations!
In my own class with my 3rd graders, I wanted a way to assess the work they were doing in their journals in response to our reading anchor text and reading skill for the week, while also holding them more accountable for their work (and the quality!!).
I created this reading response rubric for their journaling.
After completing the assignment, the students score
themselves with the rubric and calculate their total score.
Then, I collect their journals with the rubrics inside their
journals (I collect them in a crate), and score them on the
same rubric. I can make notes in their journals, and
suggestions for improving next time.
In my classroom, I have seen a huge improvement
in thinking and overall quality of their work!
I hope you and your students find it useful and the rubric
helps to make your students’ reading responses amazing!!
