I have always required my students to read, either at home or silently at school. At times I have asked them to journal about what they read. These reading journal tips are guidelines for students on what they needed to writing about. Many of these tips encourage their analysis of the novel they are reading. I had them glue the "Reading Tips" table to the inside front cover of their journals so they could refer to it when they wrote.
At the end of a quarter, semester or trimester, I would have students go back over their entries and fill out a self-analysis, guiding them to analyze the quality of their journals.
Included here is the "Reading Journal Tips" and two different reading journal self-analysis.
