This lesson looks at connecting evidence to appropriate theme and main idea designations. It was designed for 4th grade students who were having trouble differentiating between the two and providing appropriate examples, but the lesson could be used with younger and older grades depending on their needs.
This lesson utilizing several free online resources including lists of common themes, examples of themes and main ideas to compare, contrast, and sort, and the theme/main idea graphic organizer that is offered free on my TPT page. This lesson also used a free video online showing the Tortoise and the Hare story (several are available) and the popular children's book "Knuffle Bunny Free" by Mo Willems. Other texts and resources can be used and the lesson can be easily modified. The data can also be adjusted to reflect current student performance.
