No matter what grade or subject you teach, it is important to track your students' reading levels. This graph is a great way to do just that, in a way that students can understand.
I used the STAR program in my classroom, and students took the test every two months. Each student had this graph on display (use student numbers if you have privacy concerns), and each student colored in the boxes to match his or her reading level. Students as young as kindergarten can do this, although you may need to draw lines for the little guys so they know how much to color. They loved watching the bars go up as the year progressed, and were motivated to do better when the bars didn't go up. There is room at the bottom to set goals and reflect on how to meet them.
