Students will love using these Literacy Pointers as they read stories. This is a great tool for use with Common Core Reading Literacy Activities and Document-Based Questions. As teachers highlight specific common core tasks, students can practice them by attaching pointers to the text. The Literacy Pointers are a fun way to bookmark information when answering text dependent questions.
Give kids a specific task to focus on using related pointers. For example, find the cause and effect in the text. Or, point to the main idea and key details in the story.
You can print a set for each student or place groups of related pointers in baggies, at a literacy center. Students can pair together to find text-based evidence and clip the pointers throughout the story for the assigned task. This will make it easy to refer back to the text to write about later.
Send a set home for students to use when reading at home. When they bring the text back the next day, the text-based evidence will already be highlighted and ready for discussion or journaling activities.
