Product Description
I created this pack to provide teachers with materials, resources, and responses for literature or reading response journals. Students can complete the prompts or graphic organizers independently about any children's book or passage. This allows the activities to naturally differentiate themselves. A variety of materials are included to teach most of the Literature Common Core Standards. Please note that no materials are included for the standard R.L.2.4 (poetry).

The following CCS are included:
• RL.2.1. Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
• RL.2.2. Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
• RL.2.3. Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
• RL.2.5. Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
• RL.2.6. Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.
• RL.2.7. Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
• RL.2.9. Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.
• RL.2.10. By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2–3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

When I wrote the activities for the response journal, I also wanted to include reference charts that students could refer to when responding to prompts. I also wanted to include charts that could help teachers guide mini lessons. One cloze chart for most standards is also included. The teacher can fill out the simple cloze passage/ anchor chart during the mini lesson and the students can record it in their own reading response journals.

Please note that small posters are included. These are from my Growing Bundle of Reading Anchor Charts. Some posters may be repeated as to best fit the standard. All graphic organizers and charts are included in a half page size for composition notebooks. All graphic organizers and charts are also included in full page size for students that need more room to write. Two writing line styles are also included. Full sizes of the posters are NOT included, but can be purchased separately in my store (plus many other concepts) here.
