I hope you enjoy these free reading log options to keep track of your students’ AR reading time. All of these options review story elements such as characters, setting, plot, problem and solution. The Expository/ Non-fiction log helps students to become aware of key non-fiction elements such as facts, titles, headings, captions, pictures, maps, bar graphs, and tables.
Option 1. Fiction Log: I have provided two options. The first one is a two pager for students to review main story elements in a very concise version. This version is idea for 2nd and 3rd grade teachers given that there isn't much writing involved in the log. The second option is ideal for 4th and 5th grade teachers who want to provide students with more in-depth practice of reading strategies and story elements.
Option 2. Expository / Non-fiction Log: This log is a great resource for 2nd – 5th grade level students. It helps students of all ages to become aware of key elements of Expository/Non-fiction elements. Students quickly become aware that they won’t be looking for a theme, plot, or other typical fiction elements. On the contrary, they will paying close attention to facts, heading, captions, tables of contents, etc.
