The beauty of this activity is that it can be used in multiple ways. Students can complete these in class or as homework. You can do these activities in small groups/partners/whole group. After reading a portion of a book, students should complete one square of the Bingo card. They should complete 3 or 4 in a row (depending on which card they are using), and can go horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
I have placed the activities intentionally on the boards to vary skills and the type of activity. I don’t expect the activities to take more than 10 to 15 minutes each. I have also provided an additional 5 square personalizable board for you to use.
Some of my tips:
- I personally use this as homework throughout the week in combination with a reading log. I start out with the 3 row card at the beginning of the year and “graduate” to the 4 row card later in the year. They complete one card by the end of each week.
- I model completing activities that are on the card before students are asked to do this on their own. These make good mini-lessons and helps minimize students using the excuse of “I didn’t understand.”
- I have students complete their assignments on separate paper because some activities require more space than others. Using the back of the page may not be enough room.
- These can be laminated and written on with dry erase or Expo markers to save copies.
