Students select a fictional novel that is independently read and dissected by its plot on the reading log. Plot elements covered in the novel are summarized by the student. An area for stating a theme or multiple themes about the novel is provided. Finally, students give their personal reflection of the novel in hopes of encouraging another student to select the same novel later. Students may turn in the log weekly or bi-weekly for the six weeks or nine weeks depending on the time allotted for the reading. This reading log works best with high-interest novels not summarized on the web. This does not work well for literature classics because of all the novel study guides available on the web.
