Rather than require students to read X minutes a night or a week, require a certain number of books a quarter instead. When students finish a book, they write it on the reading log on the appropriate genre slot. Free Choice slots allow students more freedom. Students may record books they read at home or at school. No more parent signatures! No more “I forgot to write down the time!” No more collecting logs every week! At the end of the quarter, collect logs, and highlight books completed. Students use the same log for quarters 1 and 2, and for 3 and 4.
I recommend keeping the log in a homework folder/binder so they can access it at home and at school. I grade the log at the end of the quarter: 10 books=A, 9 books=A or B depending on length of books, 8=B, 7=C, 6=D and 5 or fewer books=F. But the grading scale is up to you.
I have used these logs for the past 3 years and the students and parents love them. Students are actually finishing books, rather than just reading 15 minutes from a different book each night. It gives them a goal to work towards. You can easily adjust requirements or levels for students who are reading below or above grade level.
Included: 1 log for quarters 1/2, 1 log for quarters 3/4, and 1 blank log to allow you to fill in specifics.
