Description

This fun game is an excellent way for the students to practice reading multi-syllable nonsense words. Help your growing readers learn to "sound out" longer words by practicing the 6 syllable types. Students will encounter words they don't know for the rest of their lives!

Why use Reading Multisyllable Nonsense Words Camping Theme Buggy Syllables? Children love practicing their skills with a game! This game gives the children practice with those 6 syllable types, which will help them decode new words they encounter in their reading.

There are 6 syllable types:

  • Closed Syllable - These are short vowels followed by a consonant, such as num in number, or vel in velvet.
  • Vowel Consonant e Syllable - This is your classic long vowel/ silent e pattern such as ade in parade or cide in decide.
  • Open Syllable - These are long vowel syllables that end with the vowel such as ta in table and spi in spider.
  • Consonant l e Syllable - These are at the ends of words like ble in table and tle in little.
  • R- Controlled Syllable - These have an r controlled vowel such as gar in garden and der in under.
  • Vowel Digraph/ Diphthong "D" Syllable - These contain a diphthong or a vowel digraph. (Sometimes called "vowel teams") Examples are thou as in thousand and poi as in poison.

Once the children know the 6 syllable types, they need lots of practice blending those syllables into words.

How it works: This game gives children a fun opportunity to practice reading three-syllable nonsense words in a fun way... with a bug theme! This would be fun to include while working on themes of spring, camping, nature, or any time of year!

I strongly recommend practicing any phonics skill with nonsense words so those strong sight word readers are practicing the specific skill and not just remembering what the word looks like. Sounding out words is a skill used for life, so it is essential for children to practice frequently.

What's included: This resource has a "buggy" game board, 32 nonsense word cards, 12 bug-related Brain Breaks, 4 "Beneficial Bug" cards (Extra turn), and 4 "Bug Bite" cards (lose a turn).
