Every Tuesday ("News Day Tuesday") my students and I read /analyze a current event.
-Finding articles: sometimes I use NewsELA (highly recommend). Other times I use articles I've read in my own daily life (e.g. BBC, Washington Post, NPR, etc). For non-newsELA articles, I adapt for clarity (offer synonyms; insert subheadings) and length.
-I try to find a mix of local and national stories.
-Suggestion: ask students to recommend stories!
-We read the article in small group
-Prior to reading--I ask students for prior knowledge on the story (occasionally I will do some prep work to build background knowledge on a complex topic)
-after reading we discuss and summarize what we've read by completing a "news brief" (included in download)
-News briefs are hung in hallway for all to read #AuthenticAudience
