In the beginning of the year I printed one copy out for each students and pasted this criteria chart in the front cover of their composition notebooks. As a class we went over this chart and I explained what was expected in their notebooks as they wrote reading responses during center time, independent reading time, free time, etc. This way as the students read their book, they can use the chart to make sure that have everything I was looking for in their response. So on each page in their notebook that had a reading response, I would write the number at the top of their page. Students could go back to the chart look at the number and see what they were missing in their response to receive a higher grade; if they didn't receive a 4. This made conferencing faster, students more independent and prepares for the NYC wide expectation of college ready.
