This product was designed after I read Donalyn Miller’s amazing book, The Book Whisperer. You will be challenging your students to read 40 books during the school year. Yes, that's right - the 40 book challenge! In "The Book Whisperer" you will learn that the most meaningful reading instruction comes from student-led reading based on student choice. I'm excited to be trying the 40-Book challenge with my class this year!
I created this product to help my students on their journey. The reading notebook you will be creating is taken directly from her notes in the book.
Plan to prepare the “bones” of the notebook as a whole-class activity. Create the notebook sections on small post it notes, and use the post its as tabs. Have the students cut out and glue down the headers for the various sections, noting the # of pages to allot for each section.
When creating the genre section, allow one day to teach each genre. As you teach the genres, have the students add descriptions to each genre area.
Be sure to have the students create the “reader response” section as the last section. All subsequent pages go into this section.
I highly recommend that you read The Book Whisperer to understand how to use this product. It’s an incredible book, and will inspire you and your students to fall in love with reading again! ~Sarah
