Having trouble getting your kids excited about reading in the middle of the year? The Reading Olympics is an awesome way to get kids excited about reading, along with a little friendly competition between classes.
The Reading Olympics is designed to last about a month (insert dates).I motivate my students to act as Olympian readers and read as many pages as possible within the time frame given. Students will track their progress. On Fridays I like to have a celebration by putting on Olympic music and announcing all the student that earned medals that week.
I also like to create a bulletin board with plates that I've spray painted in gold, silver, and bronze, one set for each class competing. Then, I have students put a sticker with their initials on the plate once they've earned that medal. At the end of the Olympics you can reward the winning class with a party! :)
