Scaffolding the constructed response answers:
Scaffolding for the constructed response question offers an effective way to differentiate for struggling writers. We’re not here to fail students; we’re here to help them grow, but how can we help them grow in an authentic way… in the way that they’ll be required to perform on end of the year state tests?
First, an exemplar response demonstrates what a top-quality response looks and sounds like. Then you choose one of the three provided constructed response pages, depending on the level of each student. The options you'll have in your download are:
1) for reluctant writers: an already deconstructed prompt in which they'll answer questions along the way as a form of prewriting
2) for getting-there writers: bullet points after the prompt to remind students what to include for a top- quality answer
3) for proficient writers: only the prompt and space for an answer

Creating assessments or test prep items that truly align with the common core state standards and that mirror current state tests is tricky. It’s not only hard work, but it can take a really long time to do it right. With this product, your students will get practice with close reading and gaining meaning across texts with an emphasis on using text evidence to support their answers. Although this product was written according to 4th grade standards, it would be a great test prep extension activity for 3rd graders or test prep for 5th or 6th graders who need remediation.
