Using a simple stamping system, students are reinforced for reading the allotted amount of time. After students have successfully read for a sustained 20 minutes during independent reading time, they receive one stamp for that session. After 3 successful sessions (or each full hour of reading), students receive a small prize (candy, bookmark, eraser cap, etc.). With each hour successfully completed, prizes can increase in worth. Once the entire passport is completed, students turn in their passport for a larger prize such as a snack, small toy, lunch with the teacher, etc.
A few tidbits:
*This was used with middle school remedial reading classes (6-8).
*Students were responsible for keeping up with their passports. *Students made a staple-less lock book to keep up with their multiple passports.
*Students had to show their passports for a stamp after that particular reading session for credit.
