Reading pictures is reading. Period. Visual literacy is everywhere. We *read* pictures in real life, videos, images, weather and body language everyday in our daily environment. Illustrations in picture books, and wordless books tell another story beyond the words. Teaching your students to pay attention to details in the picture will help students understand the text more deeply. The most unspoken inferences we gather from pictures are mood, tone and feelings through facial expressions, body language, setting, environment, and symbolism in the weather. Upper grade teachers, middle school teachers, if you're not using picture books in your instruction, your students are missing out. See Pernille Ripp's blog.
