This handout offers an easy-to-understand analogy for reading poetry--catching fireflies. It also functions as an excellent introduction of the concept of "subtext," and the difference between it and text-level meaning.
It includes an example from Walt Whitman's "O Captain! My Captain!", and an allusion to W.C. Williams' "So Much Depends." The big idea behind the analogy is to disarm student anxiety of poetry reading, and introduce them to the thrill of the hunt.
