After using several different reading programs over years with little progress and great frustration both for the student and myself, I began to create my own after recognizing a consistent deficit among struggling readers as well as consistent gaps in the various reading programs. I designed the program to hit hard the gaps in both of these areas and challenge the students to grow tremendously. I have now used/built/revised this program in both high school and middle school special ed classrooms for 5 years and seen child after child, with very few exceptions make gains like I never thought possible.
This is the very first word list in a 2 year reading program. The program begins with an intense focus on the short vowels, but includes lists and activities that contains one syllable as well as multisyllable words (for example, short A has glad, but it also introduces banana and Alabama on the first day as well). It provides the teacher with an extended list of words that fit each section. Each section builds on the last unit and reviews previous ones as the program continues.
Each unit includes: wordlist, phrases, sentences, controlled text stories with comprehension questions, crossword puzzles, wordsearches, fill in the blanks, as well as various other activities created to reinforce reading and spelling of specific words/sounds.
Also included: Directions for original games created that engage students and break up monotony at times reading programs can have. Each game is designed for continued practice on that unit, and can be interchanged to be used at any time during the program simply by using the words involved in that unit.
