This is by far one of my elementary and middle school tutoring students' favorite reading handouts.
You may be familiar with UNRAVEL or other reading strategies.
I have taken my experience with students that are getting tutoring because of reading struggles in the classroom, and I have developed a simple 5 step reading checklist (the 6th step is to circle or write your answer).
The trick is that the students focus on reading and understanding the whole story first. Many strategies tell kids to underline, number, read the questions first, etc. This can be very helpful for some students. However, students that struggle with focus in a regular setting, or are very literal will use these strategies as an excuse to only focus in during reading, when they see something directly from the question they pre-read.
This is great if the answer is directly from the story.
Not so great if the answer requires any kind of reasoning, analysis, or critical thinking.
Give these steps a try and see what an improvement it can make for your readers that aren't finding success with other strategies!
Bonus: Below the checklist I have included hints for what the student can do if they are still struggling with the answer.
