Students LOVE the intrigue and excitement of locked boxes! Harness that excitement with this “Reading Rescue” for Horton Hears a Who. This mini rescue only takes one lockable box and one 4-digit lock, so it’s a great way to try out locked box mysteries without a major expense.
After reading Horton Hears a Who, students search through the text to find the clues that lead to the combination and unlocks the box. A fun and engaging way to support close reading and foster perseverance through productive struggle. This challenge is also a great cooperative learning activity.
Reading Rescues work best with no more than about 6 students per box. This works well for small group reading time, literacy centers, or extension activities. Purchasing multiple boxes and locks would allow you to do the challenge successfully with a whole class at the same time.
My students BEG me for more locked box challenges every day. Now I’m staring the fun and excitement with you! I do the research and logistics, all you have to do is print the cards, lock the box, and enjoy watching the engagement!
