I use this resource to check in with students during their independent reading time. Students complete each activity from books they are reading independently. At the beginning of the year, I model each activity and pair it with a specific activity sheet (some from the Journey's curriculum, others downloaded from TPT or other teacher sites) so that students are familiar with the process. Starting in the second school quarter, I release more control to the students, allowing them some freedom in choosing which activity to complete with a reading of their choice during our Literacy Block. While some students will continue to need more direct guidance and support, it is also a good enrichment or extension tool for higher level readers and small groups.
I slice this paper into individual slips and attach it to the packet with a paperclip for students to keep in their Literacy Block folder. We take time each week for students to share their independent reading and learning. The students love to share what they are reading and help make recommendations! I usually include two of the "Free Write & Draw" in their packet (the bonus!) so that it creates even double-sided pages.
