In his book, Write Like This, Kelly Gallagher suggests using the party game Table Topics to help generate writing ideas. I loved this idea and use the original game with my students for expository writing and discussions.
This activity is inspired by the Book Club edition of TableTopics. I couldn't find the game to purchase, so I created my own! There are about 90 generic questions that can be used for all reading types. Just print on 3x5 index cards and cut them in half. There are two questions per card.
I used some of the questions in the Gallagher book and created the
others using a list of Bloom's Critical Thinking Cue Questions I found on the web.
The students draw from the card stack and answer the question. This would be great for literature circles, small groups, whole class discussion, reviews, etc. Can be adapted for any text.
